Both Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve and Ría Celestún Biosphere Reserve protect extraordinary wetlands on the Yucatán Peninsula and offer opportunities to observe flamingos, birds, mangroves and other wildlife.

However, the experiences are not identical.

At Río Lagartos Adventures, our focus is on small-scale, private nature expeditions with different levels of immersion — from a short flamingo and crocodile trip to dedicated birdwatching, sunrise, photography and naturalist experiences.

Celestún’s official tourism information describes its approximately 90-minute route as including flamingos, mangroves, Bird Island and a freshwater spring. The currently published rate is MXN $3,026 per boat for up to six passengers, with an optional certified guide for MXN $700.

More time for mangroves, birds, flamingos, crocodiles and slower wildlife observation.

4-Hour Sunrise Wildlife Expedition — MXN $4,000 per private boat
Designed around the first hours of daylight, when wildlife activity, temperature and photographic conditions can be especially rewarding.

We also offer dedicated birdwatching boat expeditions, land birding, sunset wildlife trips, naturalist guiding and photography-oriented experiences.

Two reserves, two different experiences

Celestún is particularly famous for its seasonal concentrations of flamingos and its mangrove channels.

Río Lagartos combines extensive coastal wetlands, mangroves, flamingo feeding areas, crocodile habitat and exceptional bird diversity, allowing us to create several different styles of private expedition rather than a single standard itinerary.

For travellers deciding between the two destinations, the question is therefore not simply “Where can I see flamingos?”

A better question is:

“How much time do I want to spend in the reserve, and how deeply do I want to experience its wildlife?”
