Rio Lagartos, Yucatán —Birding Tours Led by Diego Núñez & Rio Lagartos Adventures

Discover the wild beauty of the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve — one of the richest birding and photography destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula.

With Diego Núñez, an expert birder and nature guide, you’ll explore estuaries, mangroves, wetlands, coastal dunes, scrublands, and forests — habitats that together host nearly 400 species of birds (about 70% of the Yucatán region’s total).

Private Birdwatching & Photography in Río Lagartos, Yucatán

Discover one of the richest birding regions of the Yucatán Peninsula with local naturalist guides who have spent decades exploring the wetlands, mangroves, coastal scrub, savanna and surrounding countryside of Río Lagartos.

Our private birding expeditions are designed for birders and photographers who want more than a standard sightseeing tour — with time to observe behavior, explore different habitats and search for endemic, resident and migratory species.

Two Different Ways to Explore

Birding & Photography by Boat

Explore mangroves, estuaries and shallow coastal wetlands in search of flamingos, herons, egrets, shorebirds, raptors and other aquatic species.

The slower pace of a private boat allows better positioning for observation and photography, while keeping a respectful distance from wildlife.

Best for: aquatic birds, flamingos, mangrove species and photography.

3 hours — MXN $3,500 per private boat
4 hours — MXN $4,000 per private boat

Private boat capacity: up to 6 guests
Recommended for photography: 3–4 guests per boat

Birding & Photography by Land

Explore coastal scrub, savanna, secondary forest and other terrestrial habitats in search of Yucatán endemics, resident birds and seasonal migrants.

This experience complements the boat expedition because many of the region’s specialty species are found away from the water.

Best for: endemic species, woodland birds, hummingbirds, raptors and terrestrial specialties.

3 hours — MXN $2,500
4 hours — MXN $3,000

Longer custom birding programs and combined boat + land experiences can be arranged upon request.

Combine Boat & Land Birding

If you are staying in Río Lagartos and have enough time, we recommend combining both habitats.

An early-morning land birding expedition can focus on endemic and terrestrial species, while a boat expedition explores mangroves, wetlands, flamingos and aquatic birds.

The combination provides a much broader view of the region’s birdlife.

Yucatán Endemics & Specialty Birds

Among the species birders may search for in the region are:

Yucatán Wren · Mexican Sheartail · Yucatán Jay · Orange Oriole · Yucatán Flycatcher · Yucatán Woodpecker · Yucatán Nightjar

Species presence and visibility vary by habitat, season and natural conditions, and sightings can never be guaranteed.

Why Bird Río Lagartos?

Nearly 400 bird species recorded in the wider region

Yucatán endemic and near-endemic species

Mangroves, wetlands, coastal scrub and savanna close together

Excellent opportunities for bird photography

Important migratory habitat

Designed for Birders & Photographers

Our boats are 21-foot shallow-water pangas designed for the wetlands of Río Lagartos. Although they can carry up to six guests, for serious birding and photography we recommend 3–4 people per boat whenever possible. This provides more room for binoculars, long lenses and comfortable positioning when wildlife is encountered.

Private Expeditions — Your Guide, Your Pace

No shared tours.

Your guide can adjust the expedition according to:

target species · photography · migration season · habitat · weather · tide · available time

Best Time for Birding

Sunrise and early morning are generally the most productive times for birding, when temperatures are cooler and bird activity is higher.

Late afternoon can also be excellent, particularly for photography and certain habitats.

Responsible Birding

We never chase birds, use boats to force wildlife into flight, or disturb nesting colonies. Our goal is to observe natural behavior while keeping disturbance to a minimum.

A Tradition of Bird Conservation & Education

Our approach to birding in Río Lagartos was influenced by decades of field experience and conservation education in the Yucatán Peninsula, including the work and training of renowned ornithologist Barbara MacKinnon.

Her contribution to bird conservation, guide training and environmental education has helped shape generations of bird guides throughout the region.

Learn More About Our Birding History

In 2006 she was awarded Mexico’s National Prize for Ecological Merit, given by that nation’s Secretariat for the Environment and Natural Resources, on behalf of her numerous contributions to natural resource conservation throughout the Yucatan Peninsula, and since then has received numerous other regional awards.

The Bird lists were compiled by Barbara MacKinnon

Barbara MacKinnon’s most recent contribution to the knowledge of Yucatan’s Birds is the publication of

“Sal a Pajarear Yucatan”

A YUCATAN PENINSULA BIRD GUIDE

The book is in use in the program” Sal a Pararear” in more than 22 communities in the Yucatan,Campeche,Chiapas, and Quintana Roo. The book is donated to be used by the children and adult volunteers .The children and adult volunteers are given binoculars and other materials to use in the program. The program is in it’s third year and expanding..Barbara MacKinnon directs the program and Waldemar Santamaria gives classes first to the adult volunteers and then workshops with the children. He returns on a regular basis to continue the birding and ecology classes and go on field trips with the groups. The communities are spread across the Yucatan Peninsula in the states of Campeche,Yucatan and Quintana Roo and some are in the most isolated areas.
The program is a remarkable working example of environmental
 education at it’s best
