Embark on a scenic 30 km boat journey through the spectacular estuary of the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, navigating peaceful mangrove channels and discovering one of the most extraordinary natural ecosystems in the Yucatán Peninsula.
Your experienced captain and certified nature guide will share fascinating insights into the ecology, history and biodiversity of this protected area, helping you identify the remarkable flora and fauna that make this reserve so unique.
During the tour, you’ll have the opportunity to observe an incredible variety of wildlife, including American Flamingos, herons, pelicans, ospreys, eagles, kingfishers, shorebirds, and many other resident and migratory species.
With a little luck, you may also encounter the impressive American Crocodile in its natural habitat, making every excursion a truly unforgettable wildlife experience.
We’ll also make a stop at a traditional wooden observation platform overlooking the famous salt flats, where you’ll learn about the traditional process of sea salt production and its importance to the history, culture and ecosystem of Río Lagartos.

Why We Recommend Early Morning & Late Afternoon Departures
At Río Lagartos Adventures, our goal is to provide the best possible opportunities to observe flamingos, crocodiles, and the wildlife of the Río Lagartos Biosphere Reserve.
For this reason, we recommend our 2-Hour Flamingo & Crocodile Boat Tour during the early morning or late afternoon, when wildlife activity and viewing conditions are generally at their best.
Early Morning Departures
The first hours of the day offer some of the most rewarding wildlife encounters. Temperatures are cooler, the lagoon is calmer, and boat traffic is minimal. Flamingos are often actively feeding, crocodiles can frequently be seen basking along the mangroves, and many bird species are at their most active.
Late Afternoon Departures
Late afternoon provides another excellent opportunity to explore the estuary. As temperatures begin to cool, wildlife becomes more active again, and the softer light creates beautiful conditions for photography. The golden afternoon light often enhances the colors of the flamingos and the surrounding mangroves.
Why Are Midday Tours Less Rewarding?
Between late morning and early afternoon:
Temperatures are considerably higher.
Many animals seek shelter from the heat.
Flamingos may move farther from the most accessible viewing areas.
Crocodiles are often less visible.
Boat traffic tends to be heavier.
Harsh overhead sunlight can make photography more challenging.
While wildlife can be observed throughout the day, early morning and late afternoon generally provide the most comfortable conditions and the best opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty of the Río Lagartos Biosphere Reserve.
Rather than focusing on frequent departures, we encourage our guests to choose the times that offer the highest quality wildlife experience and the greatest chance of memorable encounters with flamingos, crocodiles, and other species that call this remarkable ecosystem home. 🦩🐊📸
Tour de Descubrimiento por la Naturaleza
Embárquese en un recorrido panorámico en lancha de aproximadamente 30 km a través del espectacular estuario de la Reserva de la Biosfera Ría Lagartos, navegando por tranquilos canales de manglar y descubriendo uno de los ecosistemas naturales más extraordinarios de la Península de Yucatán.
Su experimentado capitán y guía certificado de naturaleza compartirá interesantes conocimientos sobre la ecología, la historia y la biodiversidad de esta área protegida, ayudándole a identificar la extraordinaria flora y fauna que hacen de esta reserva un lugar único.
Durante el recorrido tendrá la oportunidad de observar una increíble variedad de vida silvestre, incluyendo flamencos americanos, garzas, pelícanos, águilas pescadoras, águilas, martines pescadores, aves playeras y muchas otras especies residentes y migratorias.
