Every fishing trip has its own story: an early start, a carefully placed fly, a sudden take or a fish that keeps us coming back.
Explore stories from our years of guiding in Río Lagartos, from tarpon fishing among the mangroves to expeditions to Alacranes Reef.
From Our Early Years
Our fishing history is closely connected with our family and the waterfront restaurant originally known as Isla Contoy.
Historic trip reports offer a glimpse into those early days, introducing the anglers, local waters and experiences that helped shape Río Lagartos Adventures.

For more than 30 years, our family has welcomed anglers to Río Lagartos. Along the way, we have shared early mornings, memorable catches, missed opportunities and friendships that continue long after a fishing trip ends.
Knud’s story is one of those friendships. He is a distinctive angler with a particular passion: he fishes exclusively with a two-handed Spey rod.
For more than 20 years, Knud has returned to fly fish with us, collecting experiences and stories to take home. After years of hearing about his father’s adventures, his son began joining him. Over the past three years, those stories became experiences they could share together.
His son created this photographic book as a gift for his father, bringing together memories of their time in Río Lagartos.
The album captures much of what makes these visits special: early starts on quiet waters, casting for tarpon among the mangroves, wildlife encounters and meals at Ría Maya. Alongside the excitement of fishing are the quieter moments — sunrise reflections, conversations and time spent together.
A handwritten dedication in the album reads:
“Thank you Diego + Family for a wonderful experience and great time spent together.”
For our family and guiding team, welcoming returning anglers and their children is a meaningful part of our work. We are grateful to Knud and his family for their friendship, their trust and the many days we have shared on the water.
