Private Sport Fishing Expeditions with Local Guides

🐟 Tarpon Fishing in Río Lagartos

Welcome to one of the most peaceful and productive tarpon fisheries in Mexico — the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve.
From your base at Ría Maya Lodge, you’re just steps from the dock and minutes away from shallow lagoons, mangroves, and estuaries full of silver kings.

Discover one of the most peaceful and productive tarpon fisheries on the northern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula.

Río Lagartos Adventures offers private fly-fishing and light-tackle expeditions through shallow lagoons, mangrove channels, estuaries and coastal waters surrounding Río Lagartos.

Our fishing trips are designed around the season, tides, weather conditions and the experience of each angler.

Whether you are visiting for a single morning or planning several days of fishing, our goal is to provide a personalized, unhurried experience in one of Yucatán’s most distinctive coastal environments.

Baby Tarpon — Year-Round

Juvenile tarpon can be found throughout the year in protected lagoons, mangrove creeks and shallow estuarine areas.

These fish are especially well suited for:

Fly fishing

Light tackle

Sight casting

Anglers looking for technical but accessible fishing

Typical fish may range approximately from 5 to 30 lbs, although size and activity vary naturally throughout the year.

Giant Tarpon — Seasonal

Larger migratory tarpon may enter the Río Lagartos coastal system during the warmer months, particularly from approximately May through October.

These fish can exceed 60 lbs and occasionally reach much larger sizes.

Because tarpon are wild migratory fish, their presence depends on natural conditions including water temperature, currents, weather and baitfish movements. We never guarantee a particular fish size or catch.

🌅 The Fishing Experience

Each trip begins with the conditions of the day.

Some mornings may involve quietly working mangrove edges for baby tarpon. Other days may take us toward deeper channels and coastal areas where larger fish can move through.

Our guides adapt the trip according to:

Tides, Wind, Water conditions, Season, Target species, Angler experience, Fly fishing or light tackle preference. We focus on quality rather than quantity, with private trips designed around the individual angler.

Fly Fishing & Light Tackle

Río Lagartos is suitable for both experienced fly anglers and guests who are beginning to explore saltwater fly fishing.

Depending on conditions, we may target fish using:

Fly rods, Light spinning tackle, Floating or intermediate fly lines, Sight casting, Mangrove and lagoon fishing, Estuary and coastal fishing

For fly anglers, rods in the 8–10 weight range are commonly suitable for tarpon fishing in this area.

We can also advise guests in advance about recommended flies, leaders and equipment.

🚤 Private Fishing Expeditions

All Río Lagartos Adventures fishing trips are private.

We do not combine unrelated guests on the same boat, Available options may include:

Half-day fishing trips, Full-day fishing trips, Multi-day fishing programs, Fly fishing, Light-tackle fishing, Seasonal giant tarpon fishing, Combination fishing and nature itineraries

Departure times are selected according to fishing conditions rather than using a rigid schedule.
